How to Clean your Headboard and Keep it Clean
The question of the month has been, "What is the best way to clean my headboard in case I spill something on it?"
Great question. Keeping your new bed, headboard or upholstered wall panels clean from anything, be it dirt, makeup, grape juice, hair spray, dog slobber, pet hair, crayons, is a top priority to keep your new purchase looking new.
As it is my top priority to keep a happy customer happy, see below for my best cleaning tips for all upholstery:
- PREVENT, PROTECT & REPEAT
TREAT FABRIC WITH STAIN PROTECTANT BEFORE any such spills or soiling occurs. Products like Scotch Guard, Guardian, etc... create an invisible layer of protection so that if anything gets on your furniture, it actually just gets on the protectant. And makes easy cleaning of your upholstery. Re-apply after any cleaning. Always test the product on an inconspicuous area of the piece to make sure it does not have any adverse effects. These items can be purchased at any home improvement store, most large chain grocery stores, as well as Amazon.com if you like to purchase items online. Which you are likely familiar with if you've ordered one of our beds or headboards.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have nailheads or other metal trimming on your bed: I always recommend putting a tape over these areas, as metals can react negatively to the stain protectants.
- POLYESTER BASED FABRICS: i.e. microfibers, velvets, passion suedes, etc... Use a water dampened rag to wipe clean. Small amount of dish soap can be added for heavily soiled areas. Using light pressure blotting, and smaller strokes going with the grain of the fabric. Finish with a handheld vacuum, or shop vac to draw out up any remaining water dampness to prevent water from leaving a 'ring'.
- NATURAL FIBERS: i.e. Linen, Cotton, Silk: Should be treated with a protectant and re-applied semi-annually. Use an aerosol upholstery cleaner or stain remover that is safe for natural fibers. Test on an inconspicuous area of the furniture to check colorfastness. For cleaning, using light pressure blotting, and smaller strokes going with the grain of the fabric. Finish with a handheld vacuum, or shop vac to draw out any remaining dampness to prevent water from leaving a 'ring'.
- PERIODIC VACUUMING of bed and headboard will keep dust from settling into the fibers. Handheld vacuums are best for this, as well as the vacuums with bristle and long narrow extensions for getting into the deeper crevices.
